Thomas Alva Edison is one of the most famous inventors who ever lived. His famous inventions include the motion picture, the phonograph and the light bulb. Edison, who is known as the Magician of Menlo Park, accomplished many successes in his life. He has 1093 patents in telegraphy, photography and electric lighting. Edison invented things that ordinary people could use. Some of his inventions were original. Some others were improvements of things invented by others. Edison also established a factory to invent things.

Thomas Alva Edison was born in Ohio on February 11, 1847. He died on October 18, 1931 in New Jersey. He was the seventh and last child of his parents who had no special background. His mother was a former school teacher.

Edison was a curious child. He asked lots of questions. Edison started school at seven. His teachers thought that he was a dull student. After three months his mother pulled him out of school and started teaching him herself at home. His parents encouraged him to learn things on his own. When he was nine years old his mother gave him a science book. It had lots of chemistry experiments that he could do at home.
