Enough and too

Enough means adequate or to the required degree. It has a positive meaning.

Too means ‘more than is necessary or wanted’. It has a negative meaning.

 

1. The coat was ………………… so I didn’t buy it.

Correct! Wrong!

Too means 'more than is required'.

2. If the water is ......................, we can go for a swim.

Correct! Wrong!

Enough goes after the adjective or adverb it modifies.

3. His theories are …………………. to understand.

Correct! Wrong!

Too shows unwanted extremes.

4. We didn’t manage to sell ………………….

Correct! Wrong!

When enough modifies a noun, it goes before the noun.

5. There were ...................... people at the party.

Correct! Wrong!

Too cannot modify a noun; however, it can go before words like many or much to indicate numbers or quantity.

6. She is ..................... to handle this job.

Correct! Wrong!

Enough goes after the adjective it modifies.

7. She is ………………… to handle the situation.

Correct! Wrong!

Use 'too' to talk about unwanted or undesirable extremes.

8. It is never ……………….. to start.

Correct! Wrong!

9. She is …………………. to have a baby.

Correct! Wrong!

Both ‘too old’ and ‘old enough’ are possible here with different meanings. She is too old to have a baby. (= She cannot have a baby now because she is too old.) / She is old enough to have a baby. (= She is of the right age to have a baby.)

10. I quit because I had had ..................... their quarreling.

Correct! Wrong!
