Complete the following sentences using an appropriate word or phrase.

1. It is time we .......................

After it’s time, we use a past tense to refer to the present or future.

2. I …………….. them a couple of times when I was in London.

We use the simple past with expressions referring to the past.

Correct! Wrong!

When there is no reference to a definite point of time in the past, we use a present perfect tense to talk about past events.

In the second conditional, we use a simple past tense in the if-clause and would + infinitive in the main clause.

Better is the comparative form of good. We cannot say ‘more good’.

7. I was surprised to see that ……………. James was there.

Correct! Wrong!

We use ‘even’ to talk about surprising extremes. Even if and even though are conjunctions.

8. I bought the watch ……………….. it was very expensive.

Correct! Wrong!

Even though is the emphatic form of ‘though’. It has a past reference.

9. I will buy that watch …………………. it is very expensive.

Correct! Wrong!

Even if has a future reference.

10. He ……………. the phone and quickly dialed the number.

Correct! Wrong!

To reach for something is to stretch your arms to grab it.

11. The first time I …………….. him was last year.

Correct! Wrong!

We use the simple past with definite past time expressions.
