Complete the following sentences with while or during.

During is a preposition. It is followed by a noun. While is a conjunction. It is followed by a clause.

During is used to say when something happens.

4. I will phone you .......................... the meeting.

Correct! Wrong!

5. I learned German .......................... I was working in Germany.

Correct! Wrong!

While is a conjunction. It is followed by a clause.

6. It happened ........................ I was away.

Correct! Wrong!

While is a conjunction. It is used to connect two clauses.

7. The shop is closed .......................... the whole of June.

Correct! Wrong!

We prefer during to talk about the whole of the period.

8. I met Alice ......................... I was working in Seoul.

Correct! Wrong!

We use while to connect two clauses.

9. It happened .......................... the summer.

Correct! Wrong!

We use during before a noun that acts as its object.

10. It rained ..................... the night.

Correct! Wrong!

11. I fell asleep ....................... I was watching the film.

Correct! Wrong!

Here 'while' connects the two clauses I fell asleep and I was watching the film.

12. I met some wonderful people ...................... my stay in France.

Correct! Wrong!
