The present participle is used when the two actions happen simultaneously.

The present participle is used when one action commences after the other action has finished.

Correct! Wrong!

He was too fat. He could not walk fast. We can combine these two sentences to get 'Being too fat, he could not walk fast'.

Correct! Wrong!

5. ……………………… his work, he went home.

Correct! Wrong!

Here one action follows the other; hence, we use the perfect participle.

  6. Not knowing what to do, she called her mother.
  7. Grabbing his coat, he rushed out.
  8. Working / Having worked hard, he managed to pass the test.

  10. Walking around the car, he inspected the tires.
