To, For, So That | Words Showing Purpose

The words to, for and so that can all show purpose but they are used differently. To is followed by an infinitive (v1). For is followed by a noun. So that is a followed by a clause.

Before a verb use to. The infinitive shows the purpose. For + noun also shows purpose.

Use for before a noun.

Correct! Wrong!

5. We stopped ……………………………. a drink.

Correct! Wrong!

Correct! Wrong!

8. I had to run ………………………………… catch the bus.

Correct! Wrong!

9. I hurried …………………………… I wouldn’t miss the train.

Correct! Wrong!

Use so that before a clause.

10. She worked hard ……………………………. she could earn well.

Correct! Wrong!

11. I must buy some clothes. I have nothing …………………………..

Correct! Wrong!

12. I need glasses …………………………. read.

Correct! Wrong!
